Originally. a brainstorm was a sudden impulse or mental disorder and this usage dates from the late 19th century. Half a century later, brainstorming became a technique for stimulating creative thinking, generating new ideas etc, through unrestrained and spontaneous participation in discussion, and this usage dates from the mid-1950s.
