Blow the gaff

This British slang expression from the early 19th century means to reveal information, usually of an incriminating nature and originated in the criminal underworld at that time. Gaff is dialectical for loud, coarse talk and has links to the word gab as in gift of the gab. It may also have influenced gaffe as in an indiscreet act or remark, but this is not proven.
