Black flag

Since the Middle Ages, a black flag in a battle or siege of a city or castle signified that no quarter would be given to the opposing side. In later years, from the 16th century onwards, it was also the name for the skull and crossbones pirate flag. In modern times, it was also the flag of Islamist terror organisations.
