Bells and whistles

Bells and whistles is a phrase that describes the attractive, additional extras and features of any item, usually used in an effort to sell or promote said item. The expression is American and is first cited in 1971, perhaps inspired by street organ grinders, one-man bands, etc, who used bells and whistles to attract customers.
