Bedlam

A synonym for chaos and confusion, which derives from a contraction of Bethlehem after the Bethlehem Hospital for lunatics in London, which was so named during the reign of Henry VIII (1491-1547). The site of the original hospital is said to be under Liverpool Street station. Bedlam’s figurative meaning for chaos first entered common usage during the 17th century.
