Beat about/around the bush

To beat about or around the bush was originally a hunting expression that dates from as long ago as the 15th century. By the 17th century, it was also used figuratively for not getting to the point. Beaters, of course, are still used to flush game. The hunters get the main action while beating about or around the bush remains the peripheral activity.
