Barney

Origin of: Barney

Barney

Barney has been British slang for an argument, a fight or trouble in general and dates in this sense from the late 19th/early 20th century. This meaning probably derives from an earlier meaning where ‘barney’ has meant a rowdy jollification (not necessarily a fight) from the mid-19th century. A modern revival took place during the 1960s in the form of British rhyming slang, Barney Rubble/trouble, after the Flintstones TV character, Barney Rubble. This, however, is not the origin because it was being used in the same sense some 60 years earlier.
