Bare bones

The bare bones means the essential, basic facts or components, without any added frills, as in expressions like, “Give me the bare bones” or “Let’s get down to the bare bones.” It dates from the late 19th/early 20th century. It is the antonym of expressions like ‘put flesh on the bones of something’, which is a much older concept.
