Bang for one’s buck

Origin of: Bang for one’s buck

Bang for one’s buck

This American expression means value for money. Its origin, however, was literally more bang i.e. more firepower for the taxpayers’ money. According to William Safire New Language of Politics (1968), it was coined in 1954 by Charles Wilson the US Secretary for Defence in reference to the massive retaliation capability of John Foster Dulles’ nuclear deterrent policy.
