Balls out

To go balls out is to act with maximum speed or vigour and the origin is thought to be a male anatomical vulgarism, most probably American, from WWII. Some sources offer the theory that it derives from the governors on early steam engines that had a pair of rotating balls as speed indicators but this is tenuous as the expression is first cited from WWII with nothing earlier than this.
