Ballistic

This word was first used to describe rocket-powered missiles c.1954 and only acquired its figurative meaning of being irrationally angry from the early 1980s. The original word has been around since the 18th century and drives from the Latin ballare to throw. Ballista was a Roman military machine for hurling large stones.
