Ball of fire

Origin of: Ball of fire

Ball of fire

A dynamic person capable of displaying rapid and effective thought and action; the metaphor dates from the early 19th century, despite fruitless etymological attempts to link it to the over 400 mentions of balls or pillars of fire in the Old Testament, usually describing the presence of God.
