Bad hat

Describes a rascal or scoundrel and the expression is British from the late 19th century. Quite why the word ‘hat’ is used in this context remains obscure. Some sources suggest that tall, high hats were worn by men in authority, which generally spelled trouble for lower classes wearing caps, but this origin remains unproven.
