Back of beyond

An expression that describes a remote, isolated place, is often wrongly supposed to be of Australian origin, probably because Australia has many such remote places. In fact, the expression was coined by Sir Walter Scott in the novel The Antiquary (1816), “Whirled them to the back of beyond to look at the old Roman camp.”
