At the chalkface

At the chalkface is a British expression that describes the teaching profession; originally a pun on at the coalface. At the chalk face is attributed to Ted Wragg (1938-2005) the educationalist who wrote a regular column in the Times Literary Supplement during the latter half of the 20th century.
