Another bite at/of the cherry/apple

Cherry and apple are used interchangeably in this expression with cherry being more common in Britain and apple being more favoured in America. The biting of either the cherry or the apple is used as a metaphor for an opportunity to achieve some desired goal or objective as in, the expression, “It’s not often one gets a second/ another bite at the apple or cherry.” Another or second bite at the cherry is first cited from the mid-19th century, while the apple version occurs a little later towards the end of the 19th century.
