Amateur

When this word entered the English lnaguage towards the end of the 18th century, a straight borrowing from the French 'amateur' it meant a lover or an enthusiast who does anything just for the love of it. It only began to get its derogatory meaning as a dabbler, or the opposite of professional, during the 19th century.
