Afters

British informal for dessert or pudding following a main meal, dates from the early 20th century. From the mid-20th century, it was also used to describe after-hours tavern drinking by special invitation of the landlord. During the late 20th century, ‘afters’ began to be used in the context of aggressive, violent behaviour on the football or rugby field after the referee had blown his whistle.
