Adam’s apple
The thyroid cartilage at the front of the neck, colloquially known as the 'Adam’s apple', seems to be more prominent in men than in women. Hence, the story that it was part of the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden that got stuck in Adam’s throat. Curiously enough, the forbidden fruit, for many centuries, was thought to have been the pomegranate. Early Hebrew versions of the Bible cite the pomegranate as the forbidden fruit rather than the apple. It was only with the advent of the Christian Bible that pomegranate was replaced by the apple. 'Adam’s pomegranate' somehow does not have the same ring to it as 'Adam's apple'. Perhaps we should be grateful for this every time we think about our Adam’s apple.
