Ad-lib

To improvise, particularly on stage is an abbreviation of the Latin ad libitum, which means, at one’s pleasure. Its use in English dates from the 16th century. The word libido, sexual pleasure, comes from the same source. In music, ad libitum is the opposite of obligato.
