Ace up one’s sleeve

Origin of: Ace up one’s sleeve

Ace up one’s sleeve

This expression has come to mean that one has a surprise or fallback plan that is likely to ensure success. The origin dates back to the early 17th century and alludes to the practice of cheating at cards by concealing high value cards, like aces, literally up one’s sleeve. The notion of having something up one’s sleeve, other than a playing card, is even older. See also Up one’s sleeve.
