Able-bodied seaman

Origin of: Able-bodied seaman

Able-bodied seaman

Abbreviation ABS, the lowest rank in the Royal Navy, although today the bodied part is dropped in preference for able seaman. In the late 17th century, able-bodied simply meant fit and strong enough to serve as a seaman, which was the sole criterion for recruitment and for the press gangs that had the power to press or force able-bodied men to serve in the Royal Navy.
