A wanna-be

An American idiom for a dreamer, a failure, or someone who's not sure who they really are. It's generally derogatory, certainly not a compliment. It is first cited in print in 1938 but its usage seems to die out after that, until about 1983 when it takes off and peaks around 2010. However, It still remains popular.
